Used Arctic Cat Snowmobiles How can i free a seized snowmobile engine?
I have a 1972 arctic cat cheetah snow machine that sat for about 2 or 3 years. The engine is seized. what are some good techniques used to free seized engines? will letting oil sit on the pistons work? can i use heat? any helpful advice would be great. thanks!
Well if it has rusted in the cylinder bores it is pretty much trash. What I would do is pull the plugs, spray Liquid Wrench (with the nozzle extender tube) into each cylinder and let it sit over night. You might repeat the process a couple time over the course of several hours. Then, then next day, I would crank the engine with the plugs pulled and the coil disconnected. You might consider turning the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft first. If it begins to turn freely put in the plugs, connect the coil and try to start it using starting fluid. Check to make sure there is enough oil in the crankcase first. This all depends on whether there was enough oil in the engine to keep the crankshaft from rusting while it sat. If the crank rusted it's all over for that motor. If you get it running, change the oil and see how it runs. If it smokes and knocks it's up to you to decide if you want to run it that way or rebuild it. If it has "rod knock" I would not recommend running it as it will spin a bearing.
