Snowmobile Clutch what do you think about putting a snowmobile engine on a good sized go-kart? what will i need to do this?
I want to get a snowmobile engine and attach it to my off-road go-kart. Its a pretty big kart so i think it can handle the four cylinders. what will i need to hook up a snowmobile engine to my go-kart? will i need a trans, clutch, or what? will i need lots of wires?
if someone can give a website to read up on this that would be great.
-Thanks
i installed a twin cylinder piston ported two stroke snow engine on a chinese made kart once. it was a suzuki 431cc with a comet CVT and was in fairly large kart. it was a GREAT combo for performance and had awesome takeoff power until the engine broke some rings. then i rebuilt it and all was well untill the ign. died. replaced everything but the flywheel and still never got it going right. so i then put in a 436cc kawasaki snow engine with points ign. and that was super until it had ign/fuel problems. i made the thing for a guy that really wanted a fun dune buggy/kart and though he was impressed by the power he now want to try a 4 stroke engine setup from a motorcycle cause the snow engines are just soo much maintenence. you have to be on top of the oil/gas mix, they don't last as long between rebuilds usually and are tempermental as ive found. great combo for getting super fast acceleration and high speeds though. and seting it up in the kart was a lot of work too, had to custom fit everything. i used the whole trany setup from the snowmobile and adapted it into the kart frame. i coupled the power from the trany output to the forward/revese box that came in the kart useing a old CV axel from a mazda car. it all was a lot of work for how long the engines lasted and though im sure a lot of it was just bad luck remember that snowmobile engines are a lot of maintenence and costly to repair. unless you are wanting a big long project it may be a bit much to do, all the little things add up. you will need to make a wiring harness, find a way of hooking up the snowmobile trany, mount all the random stuff so it don't fall off etc. i can't tell you how many custom brackets i must have made on the kart i did, i used probably more than 5 lbs of welding rod.
can't say i know of any sites about this, hope someone else does. good luck in your endevours.
