Im buying a used 100cc yamaha viper emmick, I know it will need rebuilding like all race carts, but how much and how long does it take to rebuild one of those engines? He also mentioned it has 20hp and goes 65mph easy, can it be geared to go faster?
I'm assuming it's a 2 stroke.
If you don't know how long it's been since it was freshened up, Do a complete rebuild, including crank and main bearings. Pay someone to do this, as it's fairly complex and easy to get wrong. The good news is, you should only need to do this every two or three years. If it's an aircooled 2 stroke, a top end rebuild will take less than an hour. Some racers do this after every meeting, I tend to throw a new piston/ring kit at my bikes every third meeting. If it's a watercooled 2 stroke it'll only take slightly longer, but a 4 stroke will take much longer and again is more complex (timing chains, etc).
If you're buying a race kart, you should get spare sprockets, but if you can't then you can buy them. My guess is that there'll be few tracks where you can use 65mph, and you'll end up wanting to gear down for more pickup. on the bikes, ideal gearing is when you hit top revs in top gear, hold it for about three seconds, then slam on the brakes, back down the gears for turn 1.
Oem Pistons should a piston ring have no gap when totaly compressed?
I messured everything as close as i could to oem specs. im installing low comp pistons and eagle rods into my block.. it was over oem specs. but i made sure that all the gaps were the same. I noticed that with the rings completely compressed the rings have no gap.. is this normal?
oh sorry my cyl was bored ,20 over
as of 10:24 i Busted a ring.. my 4th piston.. so ima take it to some one... first it was main bearings cause i had to replace the block. Junk yard gave me a 1995 block and didnt tell me.. so it has different bearings for crank, bought bearings for the 1996+ and didnt work.. well the thrust bearing.. and now this.. I give up im taking it to some one.. love the car tho
The proper way to measure ring gap is to insert the ring alone into the cylinder and use the piston to push it down evenly about 2". Then use a feeler gage that is the minimum thickness of the spec and if that passes through the gap is ok. Then use a feeler gage that is the max spec and if it is tight or wont pass through, all is good. If the gap is below minimum spec, the ends of the ring can be filed to enlarge the gap. If the gap is too big, there is a problem with the bore size or the size of the rings ie, wrong parts. Each ring set should be checked in the cylinder that it is going to run in>

Honda Civic B16a SiR Pistons oem P30 replacement?
Hi.I am driving a 99 jdm civic SiR sedan b16a .its been 9 yrs now.My engine is a bit weak i guess. So I am plannin to replace oem P30 pistons which is the same pistons am having now.So will i get a good compression which i had before i mean the same power?&after replacing should i need a tune up or something?
Am totally new into the car.i need some help guys.
Thanks
replacing the pistons with p30 or similar rated compression pistons "should" make you retain the same power if not more prior to them going.... make sure to check the block / cylinder walls for wear....if the block is worn you might need an overbore with oversized pistons and corresponding rings.....a tune up apart from an oil change wouldnt be necessary unless u have a tuned ecu, which would have to be re-done for the better compression......cheers
Trailing Arm How do I have the rear trailing arm bushings replaced on a rusty 1998 Honda Civic?
I was told that the rear trailing arm bushings on my 1998 Honda Civic need replacement. However, not even the dealer will take the job, because they say that there is so much rust where the rear trailing arm is mounted to the subframe that they cannot unbolt the rear trailing arm from the subframe without damaging the subframe. They suggest having a body shop cut do the job by using welds instead of bolts. I think that simply drilling out the bolts and replacing them would cost less than welding. Also, there is a tool ( http://shoptoolsshoptools.com/shopexd.asp?id=2784 ) that allows do-it-yourselfers to remove and replace the trailing arm bushings without completely removing the trailing arm from the car. (I am not sure if mechanics have this tool or if I could do the job myself.)
How should I proceed?
This page will show you how to DIY, it will take 1-4 hours depending if your bolts are not seized yet.
