Changing heads on sbc 350 from 305 heads to aluminum performance heads?
Ok, stock internal 350 but bored .040 over, it's got dual exhaust, headers, single plane intake with a quickfuel 650 carb. The only drawbacks to it are the low flowing 305 heads on it and the cam. Can't get the cam I want until I get the heads. I'm looking at afr eliminator series 210 heads with 65cc, I'm wondering how much power/ difference I'll get out of just switching the heads
Well as of now it'll rev to about 6500, that's where's she just loses all power. It's only going to be a 350 until I can get it stroked to a 383. I'm tryin to get about 500 - 600 hp naturally aspirated. It's in my camaro, 4 speed right now, and soon I'm goin to have 3.73 in the rear. It's just heads have to go and I'll go ahead and take care of everything so I don't have to buy new parts once I stroke it. It going to be a full forrged kit from eagle. But yea I was just wondering about the power from new heads, thanks
I'd estimate a bit more on the horsepower with the AFR's - more to the tune of around 70hp with a good matching cam, not to mention a superior upper rpm limit and better area-under-the-curve in both your hp and torque. I don't know why you would run a single plane on stock heads and tame cam unless the valvetrain is set up to sing past 5000rpm - you're going to kill a lot of low-end torque with that single plane configuration because of the poor fuel distribution below 2000rpm or so. Add to the pain is the poor high-end flow capacity of those 305 heads - right when the intake starts to perform, the heads fall flat on their face! Only a couple thousand rpm to have fun in - not cool.
Mind you - my estimate on the hp improvement is just on the heads - you're looking for at least 20-40 more with your cam selection and a good tune.
If you're hurtin' for cash, check out the Patriot heads as well; they're a relatively great performing head from a sleeper of a company for a bit less money.

I have a Solex carb problem, need help?
I have a a 67 baja bug with a 74 superb engine 1600cc dual port engine with a single solex carb. I just ran the wiring and it turns over and starts but it will only start if, I pump the throttle..
It will run for a few seconds and then die off, i try to keep pumping it but it still dies, so im thinking it might be the carb.
Also the fuel pump works good and all my lines are new.
I do not have a vacuum leak, its the carb and i know it but im not sure im not getting constant fuel to the engine, that is my problem with it....
No brainer-turn on the ignition and go to the electric choke. Right next to it is an electric solenoid, brass colored with a wire(looks like a cigar butt) pull the wire off and it should click. Plug the wire back on and it should click again. If not replace it. If that didn't turn out to be the problem, it has a tiny jet inside-clean the crud out. Last is the main jet. First try to rev the motor to about 2500 rpm and slap your hand over the intake till it dies. This will surge fuel thru all the jets. Next is a complete carb over haul with a jet guage(people loved to hog out jets trying to get more power.) to check and clean jets. If doing the carb overhaul- make sure the brass accelerator jet is firmly pressed into the carb body. Wiggle the throttle shaft for wear. Straighten the choke and throttle shafts if they stick. Make sure the top gasket is right for the carb-there were several which looked the same but weren't.
