Air Filter How do change an air filter element on an 1974 850cc Norton?
The air filter front plate on this bike has some curious plumbing on the inside which does not allow it to slide away from the air filter. They must be removed as one. The bike is original. Replacing is a nightmare because the air hoses must be seated. I have run out of patience! Some one know.
I own a 74 850, although, as soon as I bought it I changed it to a K&N dual inlet airfilter, and since have converted to a single Amal carb with a foam sock type filter. However, I did install the stock unit once. I believe most of the difficulty is because the rubber air tubes get stiff with age (just like me). Pull the rubber tubes from the front plate and assemble the airbox. Boil a pan of water and throw the air tubes in for a few minutes this will make them soft and pliable for a short time so you have to work quickly to get them in. I think thats how I did it, but, I must admit its been a number of years.

Stickers Decals High When to put on my cars decal stickers?
I bought some customized decals for my car from a local here. I've never applied them before and
I was wondering if there was a procedure, ideal temperature, or anything like that when putting them on. Some people told me not to apply them until it's about 40 F outside, but I live in new york and the highest in 2 months has been 35 F. Also, what should I clean the window with before I apply them? Thanks in advance! I'm new to this. Oh, and they're going on the windows, not the body of the car.
Clean the window carefully with rubbing alcohol or even just Windex and that should be enough. But you should wait until the temperatures are well above freezing. The won't adhere well if it is cold.

Mobile arctic What do you think of tailagting/driving while using a mobile? Any of you ever do it?
A month ago, i drove home at night in pouring rain, little country road, narrow, windy, no visibility, stuck behind an arctic lorry. A 4X4 came behind me, it was practically bumper to bumper, guy had his full beams on. I had nowhere to go to park and let him overtake me. When he did he made a pojnt of breaking sharply, practically drove me out of the road (Lake) before overtaking the lorry when a car was coming on the other side. Lorry piled on the breaks to avoid an accident. It was really frightening.
Finally mobile phones! We know not to use them while driving but some people keep doing it. My partner and i had a fright when someone speaking on his mobile simply went over the continuous white line, practically drove into us, never even noticed.
Why do people do that? I don't think fines deter them. I reckon they should be banned from driving. Does anyone agree with me?
On both counts. Take the number and report them. The police aren't angels to be there all the time. It's up to responsible road users to do a certain amount.
I know one report won't do a lot but a tailgater is likely to do it more than once and one day he'll cause an accident.
I have to say that, though I think this is the proper thing to do, I have never done it (either reporting or tailgating!).
Most tailgaters are just a nuisance - that's what they intend to be - so to respond to their rudeness at all just feeds their aggressiveness. I would certainly note their number if they were obviously putting lives at risk, though.
As for mobiles ... a friend of mine passed a car that was driving erratically. It was a people carrier with three small kids inside. The mother was driving at 65-70, had a mobile on her shoulder and was checking her makeup in the rear-view mirror!!! I have many times encountered similar (though not quite as multitasking as that). The worst offenders, though, seem to be tradesmen, who live on their mobiles. The kind who plonk their phone on the bar in the pub and get 3 calls in half an hour - none of them about work - which they answer as if there was something wrong with the reception. Grrrr!
Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis ~ Northern Lights?
Northern Lights Science 'May Fade Away
British experts researching the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle are facing a funding crisis that could shut a multi-million pound facility and cause a UK "brain drain".
"Everybody has mobile phones. We all rely on weather satellites and navigation in our cars. All these satellites we use every day are up there in this harsh environment and, by studying it, we can better understand what's going on up there and try to protect the satellites," she said.
But work in the cold environment has hit a major stumbling block: funding cuts.
I'd love to be fortunate enough to be able to see that just for one night...
Have you?
Is it something you take for granted if you see it regularly?
Delly, you are missing one of the most wonderful sights that this planet has to offer.
When I was in Canada, which is very sparsely populated, therefore away from the cities no light pollution, it can be seen on a regular basis in all it's glory.
With good luck, after 'Solar Flares' the solar wind is more violent than usual, and that gives the best show of all.
I remember one night when out fishing the 'heavenly light show' lasted for more than two hours, truly awesome, or maybe I should say 'cosmic'.
Speaking for myself, I have seen it so many times that I have lost count, and no I never tired of it.
