Rebuilding Your Auto Engine - A Wise Choice for the Car or Truck Owner
Is the engine in your car or late model truck worth rebuilding? Is the time , trouble and expense worth it or should you check one of other alternatives available to you such as a used engine , a full or partial professional rebuild or a factory service like rebuild - many of which now are being done offshore and being shipped back to U.S. automotive consumers ?
The do it yourselfer is faced with these options to evaluate when it comes to the dreaded time of a potential engine overall. Most likely you have gotten a good number of relatively trouble free services from your automotive engine and are now faced with the prospect of an engine overhaul. The decision to replace the engine bloc, piston, connecting rod assemblies as well as crankshaft depends on a number of factors, with the number one consideration being the condition of the engine block. Other considerations are cost, ready access to machine and auto shop facilities, parts availability, time required to complete the project and finally the extent of prior mechanical experience on the part of the do-it-yourselfer home auto mechanic.
Next consider the value of the vehicle. It has turned out that frequently the total end cost of the parts required to complete the task of rebuilding the engine is greater and more than the actual value of the vehicle. It can be said that often ego and pride of ownership gets in the way of a fair and true evaluation of the situation, its costs and reasonable conclusions on the suitability of the project at all. As a case in point one proud owner of what might be considered a truck that was long past its prime and in great need of repair convinced himself that expensive repairs were in order by himself when a quick tour of local area junkyards should of convinced that the truck itself could be replaced by any of the similar vehicles that were laying about these auto parts recycling facilities.
In such situations where the cost for a full engine overhaul is greater than the cost of a full and proper engine rebuild one option to consider is a used engine from one of above auto junk yards. True the engine may not have the full engine life of a rebuilt engine but there may be more than enough lifespan in one of these replacements which come at a much lower cost and may indeed outlive the body components and lifespan of the vehicle itself. In addition most of the professional auto parts recycling shops will both have tested and warranty the engine for a reasonable initial automobile test and evaluation time period.
It can be said that the vehicle may seem to have great value to you. The question to ask is "If I sink in this money and time of a full rebuilt engine will anyone pay me more for my vehicle or if I sell this vehicle will I get my money back?" The answer is usually "Probably not". However it can be said that devil you know is better than the devil you do not. You will have a vehicle whose history and maintenance background is well known to you. You will know the quirks and characteristics of the vehicle - of what to expect and what repairs as well are upcoming. Thus said sinking money and time into rebuilding your engine or engine block may make good sense to you overall in the end.
Does anyone sell aftermarket piston rings for older bikes? I'm having a local machine shop doing the honing for my 1985 Honda Shadow VT700C, but they don't have a source for rings. I'm seeing about $50/set online from Honda.
A) Which rings do I need? The std, the 0.25, or the 0.5?
B) I assume "set" means the rings for one piston, but I don't see anything to confirm that. Any chance it means "for your entire engine"?
C) Any cheaper sources? I've tried 3 or 4 sites that are all around $50/set. Wiseco & the like only seem to do high performance new bikes.
Thanks!

Power Sports Pro also has them for your bike. About $52 + shipping per set.
If the cylinder is only honed, you should use std. rings. When a cylinder is honed, all that is done is the cylinder walls are cleaned up some and the cross hatch pattern is re-established. This is done when the cylinder walls are still in relatively good condition.
If the cylinder walls are in relatively poor condition, the cylinders are bored. This removes more metal to remove deeper defects. With your engine, this is done in .25 increments which means the cylinders can be bored twice, .25 over and a second time to .50 over. The cylinders would also be honed after they are bored to establish the correct cross hatch finish on the cylinder walls.
Any defects that would require the cylinders to be bored more than this would require the cylinders to be replaced because this would leave the cylinder walls too thin and the engine would run to hot or the cylinders could fail.
To use .25 and .50 oversize rings you would also need to use oversize pistons to match.

Basics Of Setting Up And Running A Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor
Investing in quality tools and machines is always a good idea. A Campbell Hausfeld air compressor certainly qualifies as one of those quality items, and for good reason. This company is known for their high standards of manufacturing excellence, and have been at it for a long time. The company was started in 1836, and they have been manufacturing air compressors since 1940. Air compressors in general are pretty straight forward machines. They have tanks that hold pressurized air that can be called on when needed to run a wide assortment of air-powered tools. Let's take a closer look at the set up and operation of the Campbell Hausfeld air compressor.
First things first, like with all power tools, it is critical that you pay close attention to the provided safety guidelines and instructions. When followed, your new Campbell Hausfeld air compressor can be expected to serve you faithfully, and without incident, for a very long time. Basic maintenance and care is the word of the day.
A Campbell Hausfeld air compressor operates on a standard household circuit and are wired to be properly grounded. The electric motor has a built-in overload switch that will shut the motor off should the an overload condition occur. The overload switch can be reset by pushing the red button. It is recommended that, rather than using an extension cord to reach further away from the compressor, you use a longer (or additional) air hose instead.
Any tube, pipe, or hose piping that you use with your new Campbell Hausfeld air compressor should have a PSI rating higher than 150 psi. There are recommended minimum hose sizes. Up to 50 foot lengths you should use 1/2 inch. Greater than 50 feet requires the use of a 3/4 inch. Larger diameter pipe is always better than smaller.
Lubrication is required on many of these compressors. Some models come pre-loaded with oil, and other models require you to add the needed lubricant. Most models come with a plug in the oil fill that has to be removed. After filling to the proper level, install the breather that is included. Use SAE 30 industrial grade air compressor oil or full synthetic motor oil such as Mobil 1 10W-30. Do not use regular motor oil like 10W-30 because additives in regular oil can cause valve deposits and reduce pump life.
There is a break-in period for the Campbell Hausfeld air compressor. First, allow it to run 30 minutes continuously so that the piston rings can seat properly. Next, open tank drain valve and turn the regulator valve all the way clockwise. Do not install a coupler or air hose in the outlet port. Plug the unit in, turn the pressure switch to the auto position and run for 30 minutes to break in the pump parts. For maximum pump life, drain and replace oil after the first hour of run time.
Well, that's pretty much it. Like many compressors, the Campbell Hausfeld air compressor is simple to run. It is a great piece of equipment that is very useful either at home or on the job. Thankfully, you can find units to suit nearly any need. Whether you are just filling bike tires and blowing off the driveway, or are running sprayers and grinders, a Campbell Hausfeld air compressor is a great way to go.
Rebuild Kit Would a simple transmission rebuild kit solve slipping in a automatic jeep transmission?
Yes, but make sure you clean everything perfectly, replace the torque converter and probably one of the most important things to do is make sure you FLUSH out the transmission lines and cooler.
How to Repair a Polaris Pool Cleaner : Installing a Polaris 180 Pool Cleaner Rebuild Kit
Where can i find an upgraded engine rebuild kit for 2002 nissan maxima?
I want to rebuild my engine to make it stronger. If there isnt a complete rebuild kit, what parts would be in the kit so I can look for them separately. Forged is strong stuff right?
Maxima is such a good everyday driver thare are few manufactures that make modified parts. Forged Pistons Connecting Rods may or may not be stronger. Engine rebuild must take into account the expansion of the piston when it heats up forged pistons expand less. Connecting rods are just stronger for higher forces. A lot of performance gain is in the CLY Head porting Polishing larger Valves and different Camshafts. You can start with a 4 door family car customize the car / engine at great expence or.
