Ski Doo Snowmobiles
How easily do air-cooled snowmobiles overheat?
I have a 1994 Ski-doo Skandic. It has a 380 air/or fan-cooled engine.
Is 0 degrees C (32 degrees F) too warm? Will it over-heat easily?
I don't use it for racing and going crazy, just trail riding. I might go 65kph (40mph) at the fastest.
Fan cooled engines, such as the 380 in your Skandic do not over heat very easily, when properly maintained.
You are more likely to overheat the engine from lack of airflow by straining the engine at lower speeds, as less airflow means less heat transfer. The fan compensates for this at lower speeds, somewhat...but the fact remains.
Since fan cooled engines are not equipped with a gauge to measure temperature, your only way of knowing if you are overheating is when something melts or blows up. Fan cooled engines generally use a fairly rich air/fuel mixture to guard against this.
Be more cautious when the weather "is colder" or when the sled (or more specifically, the airbox into the carbs) may ingest powdered snow. This will "lean out" the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders and possibly cause detonation (otherwise known as pre-ignition), which will destroy the motor in short order.
Your machine will be slower in warm weather, this is because the air/fuel mixture is "rich" at these temps. A rich mixture is actually much safer for your motor, but as I said the machine will be slower, use more oil and gas, and foul plugs more easily.
You should remove the fan shroud and clean the cooling fins on the motor, and the shroud itself, before each season. This is also a good time to replace the fan belt. If you do this, your cooling system will function at its peak.
If properly maintained, you should have no problems at the speed that you are riding.
