Introducing a New Kitten to our Adult Cat?
I've read up on how to properly introduce a new kitten to an older, adult cat, and I'm prepared to be very patient. Things are going pretty good. Lots of hissing, but my older cat, who is 2 years old (Magnolia) is already opening up a bit. It's only been about 5 hours.
The new kitten is probably 8 weeks, so she's still tiny. Her name's Pantera. I introduced them to each other within the first 2 hours of Pantera being here. I have a loft so it's nice, because Magnolia is staying upstairs while Pantera is downstairs.
Anyway, the problem lies in the fact that Magnolia isn't always the most friendly cat. I got her from the humane society when she was 1. I don't know what she went through before I found her, but she's been kind of an odd cat. She doesn't really like anyone but myself and my boyfriend. I'm worried since she's not very friendly she won't ever open up with the new kitten. I'm looking for advice or success stories of the same situation. Thanks.
Five hours isn't nearly enough time. Give them at least two weeks. It may be that Magnolia will end up only tolerating the new kitten and they may never be the best of friends. Magnolia feels like her status is being threatened, and will do the hissing and occasional swat to show who's the boss. As long as they don't get in a major fur-flying fight with blood curdling yells, the new baby will figure out the pecking order quick enough. In the meantime, be sure to not break your love routines with Magnolia, so she knows that her place in your family food chain is still secure. Do not force them to be together, with cats it must be on their own terms and in their own way. Give it time and be patient. I've had three large dogs with three cats and their order was decided between themselves, and it ended up with the small female cat (12 lbs) being the queen of them all (no one dared to mess with HER) and one of the dogs (75 lbs) being at the total bottom. And that cat came to that dog's rescue when one of our other cats harassed him. Go figure!!! Good luck with your babies and I hope all goes well.
